How Psychotherapy Can Help Your Child or Teen

Does your child or teen have a tough time controlling their emotions, making friends, or coping with life situations? If so, they’re not alone! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 children have a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder and might benefit from psychotherapy. This type of therapy – which can be used instead of or in addition to medication – may be right for your child.

Psychotherapy can help children and teens understand how mental health conditions may affect their emotions and behaviors. Therapy sessions typically include:

  • Talking or playing with a counselor or therapist to help children express their feelings.
  • Learning how to manage emotions.
  • Helping parents understand how children behave around them, and why.
  • Developing coping skills for use at home, in school, and as an adult.

Psychotherapy is one of several ways to treat behavioral health conditions. Therapy can teach children and teens how to manage stress, build self-esteem, improve their social skills, and develop coping skills they can use for the rest of their life.

Depending on your child’s needs, psychotherapy can be offered individually, in a group setting, or with family members. It is often important for parents and caregivers to participate in family therapy to fully address their child’s needs.

Your child might need to go to psychotherapy once a month, once a week, or even several times a week. Your provider will help you decide how many visits they need.

Providers offer psychotherapy in an office or online setting. Some providers prefer online appointments only. Some only see patients in their office, while others offer a mix of in-person and online visits. Choose the option that works best for your child or family, and find a provider who meets your needs.
