Take Your Asthma Medication Regularly. It Can Improve – or Even Save – Your Life.
April 23, 2025
Do you have trouble remembering to take your asthma medication? You’re not alone! Many people with asthma struggle to take their medication – but you shouldn’t give up. Not taking your medicine can lead to some serious consequences.
Frequent and severe asthma attacks.
If you aren’t taking your medications, you may experience more frequent and severe asthma attacks. You may have more frequent shortness of breath, disrupted sleep, and wheezing on a daily basis.
Increased use of rescue medications.
If you rely on your rescue medications instead of a daily asthma controller, your asthma may worsen and increase the risk of a severe asthma attack.
More emergency room visits.
Going to the emergency room is expensive – likely more expensive than your asthma medication. If you stick to your asthma regimen, you will save money over the long term.
Mortality.
In some cases, uncontrolled asthma can lead to death.
Growth delays in children.
Poorly controlled asthma can lead to delays in growth and puberty.
There are many reasons why you or your child may not be following your asthma medication plan. It does not make you a bad person or parent. However, sticking to a regular medication schedule is important for your future and your child’s future.
