Blood Sugar and Exercise: What to Know
Posted On: 04/15/2026
If you have diabetes, exercise is one of the best things you can do to help manage it. Regular activity is great for supporting healthy blood sugar levels, improving heart health, and helping your body use insulin better.
Are you planning to start exercising? If so, it’s important to check your blood sugar before – and during – your workout. For people who take insulin, exercise can sometimes cause blood sugar to drop too low.
Signs of low blood sugar can include:
- shakiness
- weakness
- dizziness
- sweating
- hunger
- confusion
Keep glucose tablets or another quick source of carbohydrates with you, especially if you plan to do a longer or more intense workout.
Staying hydrated matters, too. Dehydration can make blood sugar harder to manage, so be sure to drink water before, during, and after exercise. It is also a good idea to be extra careful when exercising in hot weather. Make sure to get your doctor’s approval before starting an exercise program.
