If you are a Texas Medicaid member, your benefits will expire every 12 months. Here’s what you need to know to avoid a lapse in coverage. Do you have CHIP coverage? CHIP members are also required to renew their coverage every 12 months. 

Take Action Now – and Save Time Later! 

Make sure that Texas Health & Human Services (HHSC) has your current mailing address, phone number, and email address so you can get important updates about your coverage.

The easiest way to do this is by setting up an account with Your Texas Benefits. Learn more about creating and updating a Your Texas Benefits account. 

Texas HHSC will be sending your renewal information in a yellow envelope with “Action Required” in red letters on the front. If you signed up for electronic communications through Your Texas Benefits, you’ll get an email or text message.

You’ll be able to submit a renewal application starting 90 days before your coverage expires. 

How will I know when it’s time to renew?

If you have a YourTexasBenefits.com account, log in and click Select Details for your case. If it’s time for you to renew your benefits, it will say Yes in the Time to Renew column.

Once you receive a notice from Texas HHSC, you will have 30 days to complete a renewal application or provide more information if requested by the state. It will take up to 45 days for Texas HHSC to review your application and let you know if it has been approved or denied.

When it’s time to renew, be sure to respond promptly. If you don’t renew on time, you’ll have to complete a new application, and there may be a lapse in your coverage.

Documents Needed

You must provide all the information requested in the application to renew for Medicaid. If you don’t, your coverage will end soon. Be sure to have these items ready when completing the renewal process.

What if my renewal application is not approved / I’m no longer eligible for STAR Medicaid benefits? 

If Texas HHSC determines that you are no longer eligible for Medicaid coverage, you may be able to qualify for another HHSC program like CHIP or Healthy Texas Women. In addition, there are several low-cost health plans available through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

How do I know if I need to renew my Medicaid coverage?

You will get a yellow packet in the mail from HHSC. If you signed up for electronic notices through YourTexasBenefits.com, you will get an email or text telling you that a letter was posted to your account.

You can also check if it’s time to renew by logging in to your account with Your Texas Benefits (using the website or mobile app), or by calling 2-1-1 and choosing Option 2 after picking a language.

If you are the head of household or an authorized representative, you will be able to apply, renew, and report changes on YourTexasBenefits.com. 

What should I do now to ensure my Medicaid coverage continues if I am eligible?

First, create an account (or login if you already have one) at YourTexasBenefits.com. Make sure your email address and mailing address are up to date.

When you get a notice from HHSC, respond as soon as you can. If your address is correct with YourTexasBenefits.com, you will get a yellow packet with information about your renewal. If you signed up for electronic communications through Your Texas Benefits, you’ll get an email or text message. Follow the instructions to complete and return the information as soon as possible. This will ensure that your benefits continue if you are eligible.

My information has not changed. Do I need to submit a renewal application?

Yes, you still need to renew. If you do not have any changes, select “No Changes” in each part of the application.

How do I complete my renewal?

The best way to complete your renewal is online at YourTexasBenefits.com. You can also submit your application, renewal form, and requested information by:

  • Calling 2-1-1 and choosing Option 2, after picking a language.

  • Visiting a local office or a community partner. To find an HHSC office or a community partner, visit YourTexasBenefits.com/Screener/FindanOffice, or call 2-1-1 and choose Option 2, after picking a language. 

What happens after I turn in my renewal?

HHSC will review your application. They may ask about information that is missing or can’t be found from other sources. If you are still eligible, you will get a notice from HHSC that says your Medicaid eligibility is renewed.
